John Haberecht Becomes Life Member
After serving the maximum terms allowed, Mr John Haberecht has left the role as President, becoming a Life Member of Palliative Care Queensland, in recognition for his tireless championing of the sector and its community of care.
During Mr Haberecht’s tenure, Palliative Care Queensland has become a modern organisation, committed to supporting the needs of its members and advocating for positive reforms designed to ensure that every Queenslander has access to palliative care when and where they need it regardless of age or postcode.
Reflecting on his time, Mr Haberecht said, “It has been an honour and privilege to have been the President of Palliative Care Queensland and to have worked with the association’s Executive, members and staff to enact positive change for all Queenslanders experiencing serious illness, dying, death and grief.”
“There are many things to be proud of during my time in office. From launching Ambulance Wish Queensland to ensuring our members’ voice was heard during the Queensland Inquiry into aged care, end-of-life and palliative care and voluntary assisted dying, I am confident that Palliative Care Queensland is stronger, more respected and engaged with stakeholders than ever before.”
“I look forward to the next chapter in my association with Palliative Care Queensland, and as a Life Member will be actively engaged in all aspects of the association, supporting the work that they do and advocating for them to ensure their ongoing success,” said Mr Haberecht.
Marg Adams Becomes PCQ President
Longtime palliative care champion and Queensland’s first community-based Nurse Practitioner [endorsed 2007], Marg Adams, replaces Mr Haberecht as President. Marg is an experienced Registered Nurse (34 years) and Nurse Practitioner (11 years) with an extensive clinical and professional background that extends across the continuum including acute care, specialist palliative care, hospice, residential aged care and primary care and community settings.
She has post-graduate Masters qualifications in specialty areas of palliative care and chronic disease management. Ms Adams welcomed her new position “I feel honoured to be President of Palliative Care Queensland. As nurse, leader and clinician I can promote excellent palliative care for my clients, as a community member I can support my neighbours who are experiencing a serious illness, dying, death and grief, but it is only as a member of our statewide peak body that we can be part of a collective voice to influence change at policy, government and system level,” said Ms Adams.
In other changes, Dr Anthony Herbert has become Vice President of the association. Anthony is the Director of Paediatric Palliative Care Services at Children’s Health Queensland. Luke Boyle has become Treasurer, and Kelly Gourlay, Dr Jayne Hewitt and Dr Pauline Gillan join as general members.
