Palliative Care Qld welcomes state budget boost to help more people receive care in their community

Palliative Care Queensland has welcomed the renewed investment for community-based palliative care services announced in last week’s Queensland State Budget.

As part of the Budget, QLD Health announced $17 million over 2 years for community based palliative care services, which represents new funding through the hospital and health services.

In addition, $10 million over 4 financial years has been allocated for seven existing non-government palliative care services/hospices to keep people in their community and out of hospitals at the end of life.

In welcoming the funding announcement Palliative Care Qld CEO Shyla Mills said she was pleased to see more support offered to provide people with more options about when and how they receive care.

“We are pleased to see the ongoing support for palliative care services in Qld as demonstrated in this latest budget funding,” said Ms Mills.

“People tell us they want to be in their community during the end phase of their life, not travelling far away for hospital-based treatments.

“They want to be in their home or close to their home and they want access to supportive social networks and the choice of quality palliative care.

“This investment will start to fill the current gaps which are preventing this from happening.”
