Palliative Care Queensland

Last Aid in Charters Towers 17th May 2024

PCQ had a wonderful opportunity to deliver “Last Aid” for the community in Charters Towers. The course was developed in Germany over a decade ago and is now in more than 13 countries across the world.

The course covers:

  1. Dying as a normal part of life
  2. Planning ahead
  3. Relieving suffering
  4. Final goodbyes

Participants joined in many activities and enjoyed the many resources displayed, whilst learning about the above topics.

During the break, Jane Logan, Grief and Bereavement Coordinator at the Specialist Palliative Rural Telehealth (SPaRTa) North and Western Queensland Grief and Bereavement Hub, introduced the group to the Grief and Bereavement Service model of care.

Jane explained how there are 3 tiers of support:

  • Level 1 is for high risk bereaved with counselling and support.
  • Level 2 is for supporting service providers with education, resources and secondary consultations.
  • Level 3 is for working with the general community to build capacity and provide information about each tier of support and to highlight that the general community provide around 60% of support to people by being there for their family, friends and colleagues.

Thank you to Excelsior Library for providing the venue and for organising a display of National Palliative Care Week resources at the entrance to the library for all visitors to see.
