Palliative Care for Children and Young People

Paediatric palliative care is a unique field of palliative care that aims to assist families caring for an infant, child or young person with a life limiting illness to achieve the best possible quality of life. Involvement of a palliative care service does equate to giving up or that treatment must be stopped. Palliative Care for children is different in the following areas;

The following services and resources may be useful to families requiring palliative care support in Queensland.

Queensland Paediatric Palliative Care Services

Children's Health Queensland's Paediatric Palliative Care Service,
"Our goal is to achieve the best possible quality of life for our patients and their families. Our service acknowledges that many aspects of palliative care can be applied earlier in the course of the illness, in conjunction with treatment. This includes pain management, management of other symptoms and the need to offer consistent psychological, social and spiritual support. The provision of palliative care services includes grief and bereavement support for the family and other carers during the life of the patients/clients, and continuing after death with the family".

The Children's Health Queensland's Paediatric Palliative Care Service is a state-wide service based at Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane, providing support and also educational and clinical resources for paediatric palliative care patients. Their website and referral form is found here.
